Course Overview:

In today’s world, use of the Internet and online resources is inevitable.  From phones to tablets to laptops and beyond, students can access information from anywhere. Knowing how to use these resources safely and effectively is important for both teachers and their students, especially within the classroom setting.  The teacher’s role is to provide their students with the information needed to protect themselves against online threats; threats from other students or threats regarding their personal information.  This course will provide the background information and additional resources teachers can use to begin this conversation with their students. 

Students will:

• Define online safety as it applies to the classroom setting.
• Locate and distinguish your local school’s online safety and Internet policies.
• Explain cyberbullying and how it can affect student well-being.
• Identify proper privacy procedures and methods to protect personal information.
• Explain how copyright policies apply to Internet sources.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: What Does Online Safety Mean?

In this introduction to online safety, learners will have the opportunity to learn or update their knowledge on new technology language.  Also in this lesson, learners will review what it means to have Internet access available to everyone and what their responsibilities are regarding protective policies and procedures. 

Lesson 2: Cyberbullying

In lesson 2,  cyberbullying will be defined and examined thoroughly through the eyes of both the student and teacher.  Strategies for addressing cyberbullying in the classroom, as well as outside the classroom, will be discussed as well as the effects cyberbullying can have on students.  

Lesson 3: Internet Usage @ School

Within the school setting, both students and staff have access to the Internet.  Learn about the varying policies and uses that schools allow for within both of these populations. 

Lesson 4: Protecting Privacy

Privacy is of utmost importance in today's technological world.  It is the teacher's responsibility to ensure student privacy and to educate their students on the best privacy practices when online. 

Lesson 5: Copyright and the Internet

There are many useful resources on the Internet.  When can a teacher use them?  What are the restrictions?  Do websites have to be cited? In this lesson, learn about how copyright law applies to information from the Internet.

• Cable, Fiber, DSL, or LEO Satellite (i.e. Starlink) internet with speeds of at least 10mb/sec download and 5mb/sec upload are recommended for the best experience.

NOTE: While cellular hotspots may allow access to our courses, users may experience connectivity issues by trying to access our learning management system.  This is due to the potential high download and upload latency of cellular connections.   Therefore, it is not recommended that students use a cellular hotspot as their primary way of accessing their courses.

• Resolution: 1280 x 720 or higher.  1920x1080 resolution is recommended for the best experience.
