Course Overview:

This course will help you understand the need for and the value of a global classroom.  You will learn about innovative ways to collaborate and the concrete steps you can take to bring a global perspective to your own classroom. You will leave this course with a better understanding of what globalization really means. You will also be provided with a solid, seven-step plan to create the global classroom you want for yourself and your students. Lastly, you will look at how those seven steps can lead to standards-based projects that will excite and engage.

Students will:
  • Understand the concept of a flattened classroom as it relates to globalization.
  • Learn seven steps to flatten any classroom.
  • Examine how to develop projects with a global focus. 

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Meet the Flat Classroom

This first lesson will introduce you to the flat classroom concept. You will look at how you can flatten your own classroom through globalization as well as the impact it can have on learning. 

Lesson 2: Steps 1 and 2 – Connections and Communication 

Lesson two looks at the first two steps in the seven-step process to flatten your classroom. You will focus on the importance of connections and how to make them. You will then explore communication in the 21st century. 

Lesson 3: Step 3 - Citizenship

In this lesson, you will explore citizenship. You will look at digital citizenship..what it is and how you can teach it to your students. You will examine how you can promote and model what it means to use technology in a responsible way as a school and as individuals. 

Lesson 4: Steps 4 and 5 – Contribution, Collaboration and Choice

Lesson four examines two more steps in the flattening process. Here you will look at how you can help your students as they learn to contribute their voice in your global classroom. You will examine how students can work together with others as well as the importance of choice. 

Lesson 5: Steps 6 and 7 – Creation and Celebration

In this lesson, you will incorporate Bloom's Taxonomy into your creation process. You will see examples of projects that have been successful and you will gain a better understanding of the importance of celebrating shared joy and a sense of accomplishment with your students. 

Lesson 6: Project Development

Our last lesson explores the proper way to develop a project in a global classroom. You will focus on promoting collaboration among students and how you can keep your skills sharp with targeting professional development.
